My Reflection on Learning Chemistry
From liking chemistry in high school, participating in chemistry competitions, to studying chemistry in university and working in the research center of the world’s largest daily chemical company after graduation, I deeply understand the challenges and joys of learning chemistry.
In my understanding, chemistry is a highly systematic discipline. Exploring and finding connections between seemingly isolated pieces of knowledge, then linking these pieces to make the entire chemistry course coherent, is a major pleasure in my study of chemistry. It’s like a treasure hunt combined with a jigsaw puzzle game. Not only do you need to find individual components, but you also need to understand the relationships between these components to complete the final puzzle. When the puzzle is completed, you naturally reach the state of “integration,” where solving complex problems, such as some competition questions, becomes easier as you can identify clues, eliminate distractions, and combine useful information for the final solution.
Many principles can be discovered if students have enough time to think and summarize, but in high school, especially in the final year, time is the most precious resource. At this point, it becomes crucial to understand key concepts and the relationships between them clearly and quickly. Understanding allows you to connect knowledge points, turning memorization into a network of connections rather than isolated points. The durability of memory and the depth of understanding achieved through efficient, linked understanding and summarization differ significantly from mere forced memorization.
